Scar Therapy

If you’ve sustained a skin injury, it’s quite likely that you will develop a scar as a result.

Scar Therapy in Essex

When the healing process begins, scar tissue forms as the new tissue pulls the wound together and fills in any gaps caused by the injury; these can settle in all shapes and sizes.

Scar tissue is fibrotic and less mobile than pre-injury, and adhesions may form, sticking together layers under the skin.

Scar therapy can help by:

  • Reducing pain, sensitivity or numbness
  • Improving mobility and tightness
  • Relieving pulling and puckering of the skin
  • Boosting self-confidence
  • Providing physical and emotional healing
You may wish to undergo a number of scar therapy sessions in clinic or choose to learn how to care for your scar at home – whichever option suits you best. Book online now and feel the benefits of RESTORE scar therapy.

Frequently asked questions

Who can benefit from Scar Therapy?

Anyone who has a scar from an injury, surgery or burn. It does not matter if you scar is very old, your body is renewing cells all the time, and stimulating the area with specialist scar massage can help stimulate improvements.

When can I start Scar Therapy?

Scar Therapy can start from 8 weeks post injury/surgery provided the scar is healing well. The wound needs to be healed and sealed, with no scabs, stitches or staples and showing no signs of infection (locally or systematically), or weeping.

Ideally its best to start Scar Therapy in the first 8-14 weeks after the surgery/injury. Scars continually change and will generally take 18-24 months to mature. This is the time where you will have the best results from your treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

This is tricky to say as it will vary depending on the age, size, the level of trauma, how you react to Scar Therapy and your own individual needs. Usually, 4-8 treatments are recommended, this can be discussed at your appointment.

What can I expect during treatment?

During your appointment an assessment will be carried out to find out the best treatment plan for you. The therapist will use tailored techniques to suit your needs and adjust accordingly, always communicating with you as to what they are doing. Additionally, the therapist will offer valuable advice for at-home care to support your recovery.

What should I wear to my appointment?

We want you to feel comfortable during your appointment. So wear loose fitting clothes that can be rolled up or down. Your therapist will need access to your scar and the surrounding area.

Can you treat me if I have a cancer diagnosis?

Yes, we can treat if you have cancer. If you are under consultant care we usually like to contact your consultant prior to you starting Scar Therapy (with your permission) to check there would be no reason for you not to start treatment.

We do not treat whilst you are undergoing radiotherapy and must wait a minimum of two weeks after radiotherapy has completed.

Is Scar Therapy painful?

Scar Therapy is rarely painful. (Gone are the days of you having to have deep pressure applied to your scars to get them to move). The treatment is tailored to you. We work with your body and how it responds to the treatment. You may experience some tingling, a pins and needles feeling, or some pulling sensations but none should cause you pain.

Will my healthcare insurance cover my treatment costs?

As Scar Therapy is a form of massage, healthcare providers do not currently cover the cost of treatment. There have been some exceptions, so we recommend you to contact them to confirm.
